So today started off in a very interesting way. Almost as soon as I woke up, Mom came home from work unexpectedly (I didn't go into work myself until 6:00 in the evening, so I had most of the day to myself). It was somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00, and I was a bit startled, considering she starts work at 8:00. So I knew something had to be up. I had noticed when I first woke up a few minutes earlier that my grandparents' number was on the caller ID, so I was planning on either calling them back at some point or letting Mom know that they had called. Anyway, there's the setting and introduction and everything...
So the first thing Mom said was, "Have you talked to Grandma and Grandpa today?" Thinking of seeing their number on the caller ID, I said no, which was the truth. Then she explained the situation, which is as follows:
Apparently Grandma and Grandpa had received a scam call either early that morning or late last night. It was someone claiming to be me. This is strange because they knew that I was their grandson, they knew my grandparents' phone number, and then Grandma and Grandpa later said that he sounded almost exactly like me. Anyway, "James" said that he had been in Vancouver going to a friend's wedding, but he had a little too much to drink and was driving some friends home and totaled his car. He said that no one was injured too badly, just a broken finger or two. And then he got to the main purpose for the phone call: He asked my grandparents for thousands of dollars. Naturally, my grandparents were very concerned.
So Mom told me to call them so I could reassure them that I was in Fayetteville, Arkansas, not Vancouver. While I was on the phone, my grandparents were concerned that maybe I had put their phone number somewhere on the Internet, which I am positive that I haven't. But then my Grandma said, "OK, well you better not be putting personal information like that on MyFace or whatever" (apparently a combination of MySpace and Facebook, lol). Then she proceeded to say, "If I find out that you've put that stuff online, I'll come and chop your ears off. Then won't you look funny!" My grandmother is so funny! She absolutely cracks me up sometimes!
So, the moral of this story (which hopefully I already knew), is don't put personal information online for all to see.
But it makes you wonder....who could this false "James" be and where did he get his information? Hmmm....
